The substrate metal participates in the coating reaction and becomes a component of the coating. No allowances for tolerances need to be made. The chemistry involves a reaction between the metal surface and an aqueous solution containing chromates and certain activator ions. All chromates are intended to increase the life of the finished aluminum part and this implies improved corrosion protection.
Anodizing Specialists, Inc. provides two of these processes. The chemical film coatings can be gold in color or clear, allowing the natural aluminum finish to predominate. MIL-C-5541 is the most common military standard used, along with AMS 2473 and 2474.
